Staying safe online
Key Messages:
The internet is a great place to have some fun, but it's important to know how to play there safely.
Be careful: about what sites you go to, what you open up, and who you talk to. If you are worried or scared about something on the computer, close it down, and tell an adult.
Classroom preparation activities:
- Class discussion using stories, movies, tv shows:
Generate class discussion about staying safe on-line based on a story, movie or tv show that relates to this topic (or show and talk about a video from the ACMA website). Discussion questions may include: what were some of the dangers that the characters encountered on-line; what did the characters do on-line that was fun and cool?; how did they keep themselves safe? - Draw and share:
Use the 'tip of the iceberg' saying (and draw a picture) to explain the idea that what you see on your computer screen, doesn't allow you to see or know all that is going on when you are on the Internet - for example, you don't know who you are talking to (people can pretend to be whoever they want). Write on the iceberg under the sea all the things the class can come up with that are not seen on a web page, or chat page. - Create a symbol:
Create a collage - pictures from magazines, newspapers, internet that convey messages about staying safe. - Group activity:
Exploring the Unknown: the Planet Zyberspace. Draw the planet Zyberspace - located in another solar system. Inhabited by aliens. What are the resources / dangers on this planet. All the class has a ticket to fly to Zyberspace. Break into four groups and give each group a question to come up with four answers:- 1) What would you take with you;
- 2) How would you know who is safe and who is unsafe:
- 3) What would you do to stay safe;
- 4) Where would you look for help if you needed it.
Sample Questions:
